Special Diets

Wheat fieldsMums give their toddlers special diets for different reasons.

If you suspect or know that your baby has an allergy or an intolerance and would like to ensure that you have specific and up-to-date information, please call our careline on 0800 212 991.

It’s best to consult your GP or health visitor if you think your baby needs a special diet.

Vegetarian Weaning

A well planned vegetarian diet can be good for adults because it’s high in fibre, but your toddler needs a low-fibre, high-energy diet.  For toddlers, fat is an important source of energy to maintain healthy growth and development. Combining different vegetable foods at the same meal (eg beans on toast, or baked potato with cheese) will help ensure that your toddler gets enough protein of a good quality.

Vegetables contain phytates, which can reduce the absorption of minerals such as iron, zinc and copper, but giving foods and drinks which contain Vitamin C will help. Because iron is so important ,Heinz  toddler foods have a little added iron. Our juices contain added Vitamin C.

If you’ve giving your toddler a vegan diet, it can be harder to make sure that you are providing all the necessary nutrients and energy.

The Vegetarian Society and the Vegan Society have lots of helpful leaflets and publications.

Gluten-free diets

Wheat, rye, barley and oats contain a protein called gluten.  A small number of people develop a condition called Coeliac disease which means they can’t digest gluten.  If you have a family history of Coeliac disease, you shouldn’t give your baby foods containing gluten until six months.

When you do introduce gluten to your baby’s diet, The Coeliac Society UK advises that you give a normal amount.

If your toddler does need to avoid gluten, you can still give a varied diet including those Heinz and Farley’s baby foods which are suitable. See our Reading the Label page for a list of our products suitable for a gluten-free diet.
